Whether it is a high sheet resistance coating on an insulating membrane, or the bulk resistivity in a cast stator (Beveridge), controlling high resistances is a difficult manufacturing process. Speaker performance is degraded if the resistance varies too much from the design target in either direction. Part of the character of a particular brand of electrostatic speaker is the consistency of the high resistance processing.
That Sound Lab enjoys such a devoted following speaks highly of the consistency of their processing.
