To work out if my Ohmite resistors with magnetic parts are affecting the sound more or less positively over and above the effect that the high power rating is giving I would have to compare them with an identical type of resistor that has non magnetic parts. The trouble is, it does not exist, I use 8 ohms and the nearest Vishay corrugated resistance wire type is 10ohms and I am not sure if that is non magnetic.
The closest match is a Vishay adjustable one rated at 280 watts. I suspect that it has non magnetic parts though because I already have its 100 watt little brother and that one does have non magnetic parts. There will be another difference though, the Ohmite has corrugated resistance wire with less turns and the Vishay has regular wire with more turns per ohm. Oh well, it is not a fortune so I will get a couple in to try and make the comparison, perhaps Friday evening. I am a glutton for punishment Al.
Another point that occurs is the argument of what is “in or out” of the signal path.
I know that, that has in its self been discussed many time with many points of view but the resistor in question is not is the strictest sense, in the signal path.
To make matters even more interesting I have now ordered those 1000w Thick Film resistors at 8 ohms. That will be an interesting test.
