Thanks, and it sounds like SL's are delicate and finicky.

As I note above, I did not play with the bias control nor set it high but someone else might have since these are demos. From the few comments here I conclude (1) the factory doesn't make risks with the bias control all that clear. My instruction manual says it won't hurt them to turn it up until they crackle, then back it off to non-crackle, that's what I did (2) Membrane durability has been a problem for many SL owners (3) They are sensitive to humidity changes. I live along the ocean and the humidity can change substantially, fogs, etc.

My Acoustats were placed a few feet from a set of windows facing the ocean and morning sun for 20 years. They didn't have a bias control and functioned flawlessly. I am disappointed that I can't reliably enjoy the SL experience, they're the best I've heard, but there are other good speakers out there which aren't so delicate and finicky. Thanks to all of you for your feedback. And, having SL owner "tips" posted on this site is probably a good idea...these are not "plug in, play, and forget" speakers. I made the incorrect assumption that all electrostats would be more or less the same in durability.
