Terry, I don't know who wrote the post you quote, " One person wrote the reason for bi-amping a ESL U-1 was to relieve the tweeter midrange from having to do bass work...", but it is conceptually incorrect for a reason you do not cite. No matter how you bi-amp the U1 the "tweeter midrange" panels ARE seeing the bass frequencies, because in the U1 backplate, the outputs of the bass and treble transformers are re-combined prior to delivery to the panel. So, all those little rectangular divisions that are physically created by the framing material are "seeing" all frequencies. There is no escaping that fact, unless one uses an external subwoofer or UB1 of course. Dr. West has built the spkr to function as a single-panel, full-range unit. And his choices of where and whether to compromise look better and better to me each time I re-consider how else to configure his spkr.
