Al, do you think there could be for example a short in the mixer box that combines the
outputs of the two audio transformers in the M3? (Normally, the transformer
secondaries are isolated from each other by small-value capacitors.) This would present the
amplifier with an impossibly low impedance. That's why I suggest to Mr. Johnson that he
first borrow a known normally functioning amplifier to try on his M3s. If that amp
misbehaves too, then I'd take a more careful look at the speakers.
