Lew, I can't rule out a short in the speaker mixer box, but that would most likely cause the sound to be affected. If both speakers perform similarly, then either both have the same fault, or the problem lies somewhere in the preamp/amp. Blowing up amps is an expensive way to trouble-shoot a problem like this. Perhaps this group could develop a simple test for correct speaker performance. One way might be to set a standard SPL with a test tone, then measure the SPL again with, say, a ten ohm power resistor inserted in series with the speaker. This would be somewhat dependent on the amplifier used (would give confusing results with OTL amps), but should allow those who feel their speakers are inefficient to get a rough idea of whether their units are better or worse than similar units owned by happy users.
