Sorry for not thinking clearly as I was typing: inserting a power resistor would not differentiate speakers with low and high efficiency unless caused by lower or higher impedance, such as from a partial short as Lew suggested.

A simple test using a digital voltmeter, a test CD, and an SPL meter should work. My old Tektronix DVM seems to work well at 1 KHz. Most audiophiles already have a Radio Shack SPL meter and a test CD with a 1 KHz tone on it.

The test would be to set up the system to give, say, 80 dB on the C scale of the Radio Shack SPL meter with the 1 KHz test tone, and take an AC voltage reading across the speaker terminals while it was playing.
