It's not surprising that you are hearing clipping in and around the mid-range area, because
that is where the bass and treble transformers cross-over, which creates an impedance dip.
In theory, that should not bother a solid-state amplifier as much as it does bother a tube
amp. Nevertheless, I am fairly sure that your problem could be solved by inserting a Zero
autoformer between the amp and the speaker. That's a $300 accessory, but well worth it.
Or you might consider purchasing a hi-Z upgrade kit from the factory. The latter is more of
a shot in the dark but cheaper than the Zeros if you install it yourself.
