I sent samples to the factory, and they evaluated it. The silk was too insubstantial to be used on its own without the spandex. One might be able to use a thicker silk without the spandex, but it was difficult for me to investigate this issue without having SLs present. This stuff is extremely sheer. It weighs around 1 ounce per square yard, and I think the spandex weighs around 6 ounces per square yard. I placed it over my ears and could not hear any change in perceived sound. I can still see through the 2 layers of silk and spandex to the other side. In fact, you can see the flash from the camera on the photo was reflected by the membrane, and not the silk and spandex covering.

If someone else was interested in doing this, they might be able to use an even lighter spandex backing. I just looked on the web and found a spandex mesh with a weight of 2.2 ounces per square yard. The 2.2 ounces for the spandex and the 1 ounce for the silk would still weigh less than the standard spandex covering (assuming my facts are correct). If I ever need to cover the SL again, I might give this a try.

The WAF severely limits the SL market, and this provides a way of maximizing the acoustics subject to WAF constraints. In addition, the fabric choice provides a way for them to make some decisions about the SLs other than a veto.
