That's your problem; you went from small bookshelf spkrs to M1s. My wife has seen nothing but huge panel spkrs during all of our lives together, starting when we were only dating and I lived in a small condo. Thus the M1s are seen as a visual improvement over some of the previous panels. If you gradually de-sensitize your wife, she eventually will not even notice the M1s, especially if she appreciates good music. (You could have started with the tiny Stax or slightly larger Quad ESLs and worked your way up to M1s, but you did do the right thing musically speaking.)
