and if this is a really valuable piano, have a professional who specializes in shipping pianos do the whole thing for you, from soup to nuts. You will save a lot of heartache, your back, the backs of many friends who would rather be doing something else, and in the long run possibly even some money, if you count the cost related to damaging a valuable piano. If it's NOT a valuable or a particularly beloved piano, sell it where you are and buy a new one when you arrive at your destination. That is, don't try to shlep a piano from one coast to the other all by yourself.
