Here is the link for the Polystyrene capacitors., the last time I used them the largest Polystyrene available was 1uF.
I will stay out of the resistor type debate but in answer to your last paragraph many users find the response of their speakers acceptable with no brilliance pot. I use a small value resistance here as a substitute for the brilliance pot to compensate for the response as I find that no resistance in this location makes the response too bright.
I have recently made the transition to Vinyl and the cartridge I use has an uneven response (very bright), I use slightly more resistance here than I used for CD to give me a flat response.
