"find the response of their speakers acceptable with no brilliance pot."

The main reason for a move to "Polystyrene Capacitors" is a faster transparency... So when you add resistance to the hi-crossover... the exact opposed affect is happening....And the more resistance that is aloud, causes a reduction in the total efficiency of the whole system [more watts needed]...75% of the music comes through the hi-crossover...

I think it is a mistake to try to fix a ringy moving coil cartridge by handicapping an almost perfect ESL speaker....

Adding the correct cartridge load damping to the output of the cartridge can tame a wild coil cartridge much better.... rather than trying to dull the ESL speaker to hid an overly bright cartridge....

Many have selected popular name brands of ringing, overly bright, moving coil cartridges... to help speed up... slow cone /dome / box speakers....But the Sound Lab ESL's speakers reproduce all the extra stuff the ringing coil cartridges puts out....GRADO as addressed this problem..

Most moving coil cartages have sever ring points around 25-35 Khz ...Sound Lab ESL's speakers can reproduce sounds out to 45Khz , full efficient...
