2) no sense in using roy's resistor here, unless you like having massive resistors laying all over your listening room. really, no sense in using ANY resistor here...just bypass that POS brilliance
3) mills (lots of them) make a nice alternative, and fit nicely inside the backplate
4) using 12*2uf caps per side is going to greatly increase series inductance---while i agree replacing the solens is a good idea, i question the use of multiple parts, when 1 * 24uf will do (see ICW and other mfgs, as per the archives).
new tweaks that were very effective in my system:
5) replace cardas binding posts w/ superior electric
6) replace AC IEC w/ acme audio silver plated IEC
7) replace fuse holder w/ acme audio silver plated fuse holder
