A strange question for SLOG but here goes.
I do trade shows (Exhibitions) twice a year. We take everything you can imagine and pack it all into a 28ft long Lorry. All the big fragile items are put on first up against the headboard. We then load the soft items around the fragile items. If you have to put on the brakes the piano will be firm up against the headboard. I have never had any breakage’s whilst the goods were on the lorry. The only time we get damage is in the rush to unload.
If I were doing a long journey with a Baby Grand I would whip off the legs, wrap it up in blankets and then put the soft household items (Mattresses) around it when it was on the lorry.
I would only crate it up if I were going to give it to somebody else to handle.
