I had the VTL-300 driving a pair of A-1 back in the 80s without active pre-amp with excellent result(SPL in the mid 90s dB). So,the newer version of VTL should have no problems at all IMO.Also, Sound Lab has been upgraded so many times through the years,they are a bit earier to drive now then the model I had in the mid 80s.
