Hello Ebay Aday,
I'll try to address some of your points.
In choosing between M-2 and M-3 granted that money is not an abject, I'd
definitely pick the M-2 and find ways to make it work in the room. Perhaps you ought to consider the A-1 or M-1's as well and set them up in a tilted position as you will have to set one the speakers next to the counter. In most musical materials, a speaker with a better bass definition can make a world of difference.
As far as your concern of having your ears right against the wall, you can
do a number of things such as acoustically treating the back wall, sit in a soft chair that extends over your head, or put some acoustical panels behind you listening chair. Every room is acoustically different. I would suggest that you experiment by moving your chair back and forth from about 7' to 12' and you should be able to find the most satisfactory spot. I suggest that you use a movable chair and give yourself a week or two before you decide on your final listening position. Room acoustics is a big factor in this decision and it's by trial and error that you'll find the best spot. Also as Austin Fife has suggested some sort of acoustic treatment
may be necessary with the SL speakers as with any dipoles for that matter.
You wrote: "I read about people on audiogon trying to find their "last set of speakers"; I'm hoping this might be the case in my situation." To this I say good luck. You'd be a very happy man if you could find such speakers that will always keep you satisfied. Every speaker that I've heard has been far from perfection. Every time that I attend a live concert I realize how imperfect my speakers are. I love the SL speakers but quite often I make a
switch to dynamic speakers. Then again, there may be some in this forum who would consider their SL speakers as their "last set of speakers."
