It’s time to make some very big changes in the SLOG and ASOG sites. I was recently a victim of “Enronitus”, so I’m actively seeking new employment. My previous employer won’t be there much longer, but is still hosting our sites for free. How much longer, I don’t know, but we don’t have much time to move our web sites.
A very good friend has just offered us a golden opportunity. My friend owns an ISP (Internet Service Provider) in Pahrump, Nevada. Paul has offered to us free access to his T3 Internet connection. This means we can install our own web server at my friend’s facility. All we need to do is come up with a server and have my friend put it in service.
If you read my resume, you would learn that building, configuring, and deploying web servers is one of my job skills. To that end, I would like to buy the parts we need, operating system, and software to host our own web sites. Finally, we would have control over our own destiny and not need to ever worry about the generosity of any employer or third party Internet service provider. We would be fully autonomous! We would be our own ISP.
I believe we can accomplish our goal for about $700. I will be responsible for all the remaining effort to get this project completed. I know it’s pledge weeks for NPR, so I hope this isn’t a conflict. If you would like to help and keep our web sites going, please send any donations to:

I would also like to hear from any volunteers who would like to be forum moderators. I could sure use the help.
For the more technically minded among us, read computer geeks, we’ll be running Solaris X86 on a P3-1000, with 512 Mbytes of RAM. The webserver will be the most recent version of Apache. The new server will host it’s own DNS, so we will be authoritative for our own domain.
Thank you for all your help. I know I can always depend on the loyal communities that frequent the SLOG and ASOG sites.
