I think it should be pointed out that the wire size needed to carry a given load is dependent on the lenght of the wire run. Thus 12 guage may be sufficent for a 20amp circut if the length of the run is 30ft, but 10 guage may be necessary for a much longer run. Electricians (and code) use a chart to show what size wire at what voltage is necessary to deiver a given number of amps at a specified distance.
