Just a caveat. Unless you know a great deal about transformer design and tube amp design, it is
perhaps unfair to cast aspersions on the CAT output transformers per se. The circuit itself may
have been designed to work best with NFB, such that when you remove the NFB the frequency
response appears to suffer. Also, at what power output did you measure frequency response
with vs without NFB? That also can make a great deal of difference. If the frequency response at
very low power output does not suffer much in the absence of NFB, this may explain why the
amp sounds good but does not measure so well at or near max output. Like Hernando said, "It is
better to sound good than to measure good, dahling."
