funny enough, when i purchased my pair of used SOUND LABS A-1's through AUDIOGON, back in december 2000, the seller turned out to be one of the founders as well as one of the owners of PIPE DREAMS speakers, and, as he explained to me, the only reason that he was selling the A-1's was because they were being used to "voice the PIPE DREAMS as close as possible to the A-1's and that, after reaching that goal, he really did not have any need to keep the A-1's around for comparison purposes any longer" !!!!
apparently he and the design engineers at PIPE DREAMS felt that, when it came to reproducing sound through loudspeakers, the SOUND LABS A-1's represented something that other speaker manufacturers could only hope to achieve after much comparison and R&D....
