Sallie placement

I found some Auralex Venus bass traps for next to nothing and will be trying them out as a DIY Sallie. I have four 2'x4' panels. Can these things be put right up against the back panel or should they be spaced back from them some distance. I don't have a lot of breathing space behind my Aura's, about 2.5 feet. Surprisingly bass is excellent but depth and soundstaging is limited. This is the best place in this room for the speakers (I have had them almost everywhere).
