Yes it is the backplate as when I changed side, the fire-cracker sound goes with the "defective" backplate. The strange thing is, for example, during the 6th track Hotel California/Eagles Freeze Over, which is a slow pace song with high's and low's, the whole song is OK until the audiences slap their hands, then the fire-cracker sound comes out together with the slapping hand sound.

Tonight i would increase the bias from the normal 12" oclock to 1" to hear if the other side also has a problem too when I do the test tomorrow again. Does anyone have the similar problem that the backplates breakdown so easily ? Mine is a bi-wire version. Does it matter ? If I send the backplate back, this backplate would be repaired the 3rd time (1st time it was burned probably due to an amp overload (so I change the amp) that the bass sound was gone, 2nd time it was fire-cracker sound in bass range). Is it possible for me to conduct some tests so that Dr West can just send the parts then I can have someone do the repair here ? Is it because mine is a bi-wire version that it is problematic ? If I increase the bias, would it help the speaker as the amp would have a lesser load so that it would not hurt the speaker (mine is a Boulder with 500w per side) ? Any tips to prolong the life of the speaker ? I read from Quad Germany website that they install an electronic overload protection to the vintage ESL's, when they are asked to refurbish them, for the ESL's to handle solid state amp (as the ESL was designed for low power tube amp). So does solid state amp not good for Soundlabs ?

PS: when it sings, it sings like an angel from heaven. but it is quite frustrated to have this kind of problem again and again so I hope I can get some advice here for me to handle my Soundlabs once it is back to shape as I just hate to do repairs.
