I have a pair of A7's but they use the same back plate as the A3's. I have had mine in several times for repair also. I have witnessed the same problem, kind of a distinct, almost a clapping sound on very dynamic passages like drums and piano? I test mine with a sine wave generator running at a moderate level. As you sweep from 35hz to 20k, the tone should be pure and effortless sounding. If you have having problems as I did, the 35hz-400hz range was very distorted sounding. I replaced the bass transformer and the problem went away. My problem is that I overdrive them which breaks down the insulation due to air gap sparking which then leads to a total break down of the transformer. I have even had one of my transformers actually buzz so clearly, the I could easily hear the music. I have replaced the bass transformers myself and it quite a hassle due to their weight and ackwardness to handle but it saved me from sending it in, waiting for repair and then waiting for it to be sent back.

If I can be of any assitance, let me know.

Good luck.
