Whenever there is an imbalance in the system such as created by the SL backplates, one amp must necessarily work harder than the other, regardless of the source. I'd rather begin with my gain controls neutral.

What would you do if there were no bias control, like Accoustat
For the twenty-five years I owned them, this new problem never manifested itself.

You could also put a second grill cloth over the stronger speaker,with the same result.
And completely negate the benefits of the spandex.
