This is typical in my experience(U1's), it measures and sounds to hot on the top end with the control bypassed or rotated to max.
I would hook up the brilliance control temporarily and try listening/measuring with different control settings. Find a control setting that works for you, measure the resistance and replace the control with a fixed resistor of that value. You might also consider conntacting Roy Whippey about his custom super resistor made to the value needed. Everyone that has used it has raved about how well it works.
