The M-1 and A-1 are virtually the same speaker in a different wrapper. The A-1's are a stiffer at the junction between the panel and base, but in practice I don't hear a difference. On the other hand, I definitely hear a difference with the ultra-stiff metal frame U-1's.

The new higher-impedance conversion is very highly recommended for use with your MA-1's. It will significantly increase the power and control your amplifier will have. The new high-impedance backplate with MA-1's is probably going to be comparable to the old backplate with MA-2's. Older backplates can of course be updated.

The critical factor in older Sound Labs is the insulation material on the stators. Hopefully the insulation material on the pair you're looking at is in good shape. Wooden cores are not a good thing, unfortunately.

Feel free to e-mail me with any questions you might have.

Best wishes,

Duke
