As I recall, the thickness of the layer of silicon caulk was NOT critical. I squirted it in with the applicator supplied along with the tube of caulk, after carefully snipping an access hole into the Spandex cloth, which I later sewed closed. In my case, I think the mylar had torn right at the margin of the frame, in a corner of one panel at the top of the spkr. I would consult the factory as to whether this technique can be successful with larger holes or holes in the center of a rectangular panel. In my case, the arcing was all on one side of the panel, so I applied the silicon on that side only.
