I saw Mayor Johm's post and it reminded me that I once had a burned out brilliance control in one of my M-3 backplates. The symptom was that the treble would go in and out during playback. It got progressively worse and occurred more often at higher volumes. Try turning the brilliance control back and forth a bit. If at some point the treble does kick in it is quite probable you have a burned out brilliance control. If so it will need to be replaced.
