Removing the grille cloth is not as daunting a task as you describe, although it does take time. Drill out the plugs starting with a pilot drill, then go to larger bit not quite as large as the diameter of the plug shank in the trim. Use a small screwdriver or some such tool to remove the remains of the plug, taking care not to damage the trim. Remove the screws holding the trim on. You will see numerous staples on the sides. Instead of removing them, it's often just as well to take a utility knife or box cutter and carefully cut the cloth alongside the staples so as to view the panel. When you're ready to put it back in place, stretch the cloth a bit and restaple in place. Use an electric staple gun if available. Replacement wood plugs can be obtained from local stores such as Home Depot, or from Sound Lab.
