We inherited a set of four beautiful rosewood chairs; I mean REAL rosewood, which is about as
dense as lead and much harder than lead. Was having a problem with bass boominess at that
time (in spite of having installed my home-made sound-absorbent panels on the rear walls
which did help the mid-range and treble) and had to place one chair behind one speaker whilst I
decided where to fit all four chairs in our living room. I was listening to music at the time and
noticed that the bass became much cleaner and smoother with the chair behind that one
speaker, so I put another one of the chairs behind the other speaker and have been happy ever
since. If we have a big party, I have to take the chairs out of there for people to sit on. On those
occasions, no one is listening seriously to the music anyway. Since I paid nothing for the chairs,
Sallies are not cheaper. I am not sure that a lesser piece of heavy, dense furniture would not
have the same good effect. Absorbing v low frequencies does require dense materials.
