Stayed up too late last night running the calibrations/measurements with the Rives test CD and SPL meter. No wonder the A-1s were sounding 'overwhelming' in the bass. There is a very clear room mode at 40 Hz (on the order of +14 dB!) and a secondary one at 80 Hz. These are right where they should be - at least in theory - given the dimensions of the room. The PARC is capable of correcting the problem, but I may try moving a couple of very heavy overstuffed chairs behind the speakers as a temporary measure to check the effect. In the long run, I'd rather have a measure of passive correction in place.
Will attack any mid/high frequency problems next, although it's unclear to me why they should occur to any degree. The A-1s are 10' away from the listening position, centers pointing directly at the listener, and there are no side walls anywhere near the speakers (they are on the long wall of the room...33 feet). Given the increasing directionality as you move up the spectrum, there would seem to be relatively little interface reflection coming back at me. Am I missing something?
Thanks again for your help, Lew. The SoundLabs have brought back the pleasure in listening, and they're going to get a whole lot better.
Mike
P.S. I'm going to start a discussion about all this on the Rives forum at Audio Asylum. Should be interesting to hear what they have to say.
