The speakers at the show should not have had the bias pot failure, but at this point, who knows for sure? The method of construction places the pot at risk for power line transient overvoltage damage, and this damage could happen at any time.
Ralph's comment relates to asymmetrical clipping of the preamp output stage which results from a change he made in how power is supplied to the Circlotron. This could have been the source of the clipping you heard.
The MA-2s have plenty of power for M-1s that do not have the bias pot failure.
