Lew,

I would imagine that SL are using Dupont Mylar, its as good as it gets. The value used per speaker is miniscule compared to the speakers value so I could not imagine them changing over to another brand.

There are so many variables that go into fitting the membrane to the frame. I developed my own way of doing it, this spanned something like 10 new membranes over a period of I think about 3 months. My main reasons for changing the membrane were firstly to alter the surface resistivity and then after I had done that I would improve on my copper charge ring design. At the very end of my experimentation I worked out a way of fitting a twin thickness membrane without sacrificing any significant surface area. The reason for that idea was to solve the stator slap problem on the large base excursions, it works. I could proceed with one more idea that would I am sure improve efficiency but other projects have overtaken the idea.
Anyway, so far so good, getting on for 2 years of service and not a blemish.

I have no idea how SL stretch and apply their membrane, or if they have made changes recently, perhaps Duke will answer your question in detail, I would also find the answer very interesting.

Roy
