I owned a pair of A3's (without the torroidal upgrade package) and they were driven ok by an Audio Research 100.2. I then upgraded to my Ultimate 2's (with the torroidal upgrade) but the Audio Research amp proved unable to drive them without clipping. I went to the Innersound ESL amp, which proved more than adequate to the task. BUT the point of all this is that I have just within the past week upgraded my amp to a set of older Atma-Sphere MA1 mk 2's (with internal upgrades like internal silver wiring and a Caddock resistor package) and this has been a major upgrade for me. I strongly recommend that you consider these -- they go deeper with better harmonic detail and provide a better soundstage than any solid state amp I have used. I have not yet even done the backplate mods to my Soundlabs and they still sound loud enough to me already with the Atma-Spheres.
