I did not mean to doubt your veracity. If 90db peaks are all you are getting, then so be it. As Albert says, however, you should be getting more sound pressure than that. As for the "stuff" in the backplate that robs some transparency, have you tried bypassing the "Brilliance" control? This makes a BIG difference in my experience of both U2s and M1s. Second, I advise replacing the Solens caps in the hi-pass filter with bona fide film and foil types, to your own taste of course. I have used MIT PPFX-S (polypropylene and tin foil) and Southern Electronics (polystyrene) types in this application, and both are a big improvement vs the Solens metallized film types that are stock. If you've got the moolah, you could use Teflon types, but it will cost hundreds of dollars and take up a lot of space, as the largest value is ca 1uF, AFAIK. I have heard Avantgarde spkrs only in a dealer's showroom, yet my response was similar to yours only more emphatic: At first they seemed like a revelation. Then after 10 minutes the mushy unintegrated bass and the piercing tweeter had me heading for the door. I am sure they sound much better in a properly setup home environment however.
