You might try the Wadia 861, with adjustable output level for "maximum" on the level control function. There is little or no resolution penalty with the digital computation of output level in this machine.
It drives a pair of Atma-Sphere MA-1s through balanced and an InnerSound ESL through unbalanced interconnect in my system. The MA-1s inputs are loaded with 300 ohms from each phase to ground, and the ESL is loaded with 680 ohms on each unbalanced input (I modified the amp to do this).
This loading does wonders for the treble purity with my unshielded Silver Audio interconnects, and the Wadia has no trouble driving it.
Any complaints about digital versus analog have to be considered in context of refinement of the digital source and loading of the cables, assuming the DAC output driver is capable.
