I can’t find the schematics either. Unfortunately, I believe Will, the Australian that figured this out and sourced them has passed away a year or so ago.

If you are looking at tube amps and can go for the Atma-Sphere MA-1, I would go there. These are incredibly reliable and Ralph provides great support. I also think these are among, if not the best tube amp for SL speakers. Definitely worth a shot over CJ and other options.

          These have been sold. Thanks.

PS. Also, agree with Ralph being excellent to work with.

It is so awesome to see all the discussions stepping up. I had previously used amplifiers with the 500 watt/ch Ncore modules, and a few other large Class D amps. Generally, they were great-but I found a whole new level of satisfaction when I jumped to Atma-Sphere amplification on my U-1s. I don’t think you can go wrong with them, and the MA-1s did a surprisingly good job on my U-1 with the PX panels and Consummate backplate.

When I had this issue in a past set of SLs, it turned out to be a panel issue fwiw. Dr. West and company will be a great asset in helping you get to the bottom of your issue.

I can’t believe it, but I have had real improvements using Shunyata Alpha NR cables. I don’t think it is a matter of the conduction characteristics, but I think the filter they put on the cables does a lot to quite the noise of the bias supplies. I think the speakers are either susceptible to, or generate a lot of gunk in the system.

In the past, people had great luck with a Wattmaster cable with crazy shielding and filtering. I cannot recall the model, but it wasn’t on the budget end.

I am using the Herbies gliders with the cup to center the speaker spikes. Didn’t do much listening at all to current setup without, so I can’t comment on differences. I will say that there is a clear benefit of being able to easily adjust the alignment with the gliders on my tile floor.

PS. One correction….the 2nd generation backplates had full jumper controls, including mid and low. It was just that vs. the selector knobs used in later versions.

In addition, regarding the backplate near consummate comments, there are many changes even between versions with the same Toroid version. Over the years, a few version notes:
                        1) Backplates with attachment screws exposed (original, brown ones, very old)
                        2) Backplates with screws hidden, a single low, jumper/banana tone control, vs. the later versions with 3 tone controls (quite old).
                        3) Backplates where the bass transformer was wired to repel dust instead of attract it (forgive me for lack of more technical explanation on this one)
                        4) Backplates with the 3 tone controls and new, improved mixer box and new values on the “crossover” components. I believe only the later versions of the 3 tone control backplates had the mixer and component value changes.

I think there were other component changes above the few I mentioned above. Some of the backplates may have had these updates incorporated inside, it is hard to know without detailed photos of the underside. I wouldn’t be afraid to send them into SL to be completely updated.

There were many generations of Pre-PX panels. The durability and quality of the sound is different between them.

At least a few versions that I can think of:
-Wooden construction with equally spaced horizontal ribs (original A-1)
-Plastic construction with equally spaced horizontal ribs (more durable and stable)
-Plastic construction with the horizontal ribs broken into different length segments, significantly reducing the “drumming” affect, among other things. This was the latest up to the PX panels. You will see the ribs at the top much closer together than the ones on the bottom with these.
-PX panels. Total overhaul of membrane material, stator wire insulation and construction design and materials. A big deal imo. I believe they did get more efficiency out of these, even with an apples-apples dispersion version comparison.
-PX Panels with Bass Focus. Basically the same as PX, but changed the horizontal rib spacings once again to improve bass response.

You will likely find the MA-2 to handle those panels easily. Mine don’t get pushed too hard, and I have my panels in a big open area due to an open floor plan in current house. Even the MA-1s did a darn nice job. As pointed out by many, not really easy to compare SS watts with Atma-Sphere watts on Soundlabs.

Also, please note those panels won’t really fit right in the A-1s, cosmetically. If you are just using backplate with a seperate frame you build, you will be good to go.

                                Hello,
Thanks for reaching out. Actually, that is a great question. I haven’t spent much time on this new forum, working on figuring out how to contact members without posting personal information on forum. Please let me know if you find a way. We will figure something out. I also have them on US audiomart, and you can send me a message through there as well.

Price is $3800 or best reasonable offer.
