I upgraded my U790 panels to U890 bass focus in 2018.
As the panels are taller than the original frames, as they are with the U1’s your contemplating purchasing, I had SL make a set of extensions so the speaker looked finished. The extensions came to me unfinished so I could have them painted to match the color of the existing frames by a local auto body shop. To the rear of the frame, rectangular pieces of kydex/lexan were added to match the existing mounting flange and finish the look.
See the attached pix. and diagram to see how it was done.

Those look like a custom height panel, most likely made when the previous owner upgraded to a PX panel. SL has made custom width panels in the past so I’m sure they’ve also done custom heights.
As to determining if the panel is a PX panel, the earlier panels had no lattice structure between the vertical and horizontal ribs. The lattice greatly strengthened the panel.
Use a bright flashlight and shine it into the panel, you’ll be able to see whether or not the lattice is present.
See the pix. I attached to get an idea of how it looks.
And yes, that is a damaged panel, a story for another time.

Are the PX panels also Bass Focus?
It is possible to transfer the cores from the M1 to U1, but I would verify that both sets of cores are the same size as there have been minor size differences over the years as the stator construction evolved. You might want to check with the factory to further verify fitment.

One other question, does the “spitting/arcing” occur without music playing? If so, this could be caused by dust or particulates trapped between the stator and membrane, it can also manifest itself in form of whistling, buzzing. Generally, this resolves itself on its own. I have experienced this with earlier panel versions although, so far, not with my current Bass Focus 845PX’s.

Another thought, does the music your currently playing contain greater bass energy than that played in the past? If that is the case you might have reached the panels output limits.

Anyhow, I’m only throwing out a few ideas. There may actually be an issue with the panels. That said, the PX panels, as I’m sure Tom will agree, have been the most
reliable of any produced in Soundlab’s history.

                Hi Tom,

Congrats on your new 845 panels.

I did the same when i upgraded my U790’s.

One thing I did for my frames, and you might consider for yourself, is to have a set of extensions made by Roger’s frame fabricator so the frames now match the height of the new panels.

The extensions have a slotted inner tube that slides into the open top of the frame and neatly finishes the look. The extensions were unpainted when I received them and i had an auto body shop paint them to match the existing finish.

Attached are a few pictures along with Roger’s diagram showing their construction.

                  Hi,
I’m glad to hear someone else was having a problem, I thought I was only me.
I couldn’t get into the site on 2/23 so I contacted Mark Gilmore, site owner, who responded he was not having a problem. At that point I tried to enter again and was able to do so without issue.

Mark then checked the log files and found anything awry, so he wrote it off to a possible routing issue. Go figure.

                    Hi Ralph,

Glad to able to once again participate in the discussions here.
To add a bit to your comments, I was also with you at the Chicago Audio Meeting back in 2006. It was great to meet and spend time with Connie and Roger, first at Brian Walsh’s place, later at dinner that Saturday evening and the following day at the actual meeting. Here are a few pictures from that event.

The first few pictures show a number of attendees, SLOG members, assisting Roger in setting up a pair of M945’s hours prior to the start of the meeting.
The last pix. is of Roger and Connie.
Also, Richard Schramm of Parasound was also in attendance.

                      @chungjh

The factory does offer a bi-amp option.
Your current backplates can be retrofitted if desired.
I would email Roger for instructions. If your a bit handy
it’s actually fairly easy to do yourself. I did this
                      myself for my U890’s

The diffusion ring consists of copper foil that runs around the perimeter of the panel

                          Hi Ezequiel64,

Could you take a picture of the underside of your backplates?
I’m curious as to how it compares with the backplates for the full
                          range SL ESL’s.

Aside from the turns ratio I’m not aware that any other specs for the AU90 were ever available.
I would contact Rob Mackinlay of ER Audio to see if can supply any
specs. Also, if enough people have an interest maybe Rob would consider doing another run of transformers.

The rear speakers look like Acoustats to me. Maybe he is running them as surrounds.

Lovely room and system, I like the custom grille color and finish.

I’m currently in the process of updating my system. For years I’ve used a Crown Macro and Tact 2.2xp. The Crown, not well regarded in the
High End, but worked well for me over the years.
Anyhow, I’m waiting for a pair of Atma Sphere MA-2’s to be returned from AM for some cosmetic upgrades. As to the pre amp, I just received
                                a used Anthem STR.
CD/Streamer is next, not sure what I’ll get there.
As to vinyl, I have a Goldmund Reference Turntable that I recently refurbed.

Got it, I misread your post. Sorry. It does sound like clipping.
The CLX may be easier to drive than your SL’s. Its also hard to compare your CJ to an OTL amplifier like the MA1.

I ran into a similar situation at one point. I bought a pair of Mac
MK1.2Kw monoblocks, they would not drive my U1’s without clipping.
I guess the Macs couldn’t handle the rising impedance of the SL’s
so I sold them and moved on.
