Today’s post is to inform all our past, present or future Sound Lab aficionados, that the founder and principal researcher and designer for all Sound Lab products since its beginning in 1978, Dr. Roger West, has officially retired from his position, passing the company to the care of his son Brett who has been number two for more than 2 decades. Anyone who knows Roger would also know and expect that he would never consider retirement without strong persuasion from both ‘time’ and ‘mortality’, and therefore this notice is also to serve to share news that Roger has passed on. After finishing another day of work earlier in June Roger peacefully at the age of 92.
The passing of a great man whose passion and dedication to his field of study, fueled by an abundance of energy, imagination and persistence to pursue excellence and continuous advancement, leaves all who have known Dr. West and his achievements an equally great if not greater gift of his example, a beacon of a path and of an approach to life worthy for anyone to follow and to emulate, giving us strength thru memories, bringing inspiration to us all.
The creative process in his designs, the study of technologies and applications is, in the best sense, an endless and fascinating journey that always brings change, new challenges and fresh thoughts. No one can ask more of life than to have been able to continue in those pursuits with the love, respect and support of a great family and to be able to enjoy and share those achievements with family, friends and a world community. Dr. West worked, creating and sharing the results he has pioneered in the field of his choice, until literally his last moment in this world.
With careful preparations planned over the recent years, Roger leaves the reigns of what he always described as an audio research company that also happens to make and retail the occasional electrostatic speaker (the story line for his company Sound Lab Inc. for over 48 years), to his son Brett who himself has been the key craftsman and product manager for over 20 years bringing all of Roger’s designs to life to be enjoyed all around the world. Brett together with Connie (Roger’s steadfast wife) as the backbone to the office and operation, Sound Lab will continue to build on Dr. West’s legacy as an intimate family owned enterprise dedicated to the manufacture of excellence for electrostatic application for audio speakers.
